Cocky yet a genius--A$AP Rocky has made trends rather than following them. The young rapper from Harlem, New York is renowned for cranking up the weirdness through his music and produces records under the pseudonym Lord Flacko.
Not only is he a famous rapper but his footprints on fashion have made him one of the most influential fashion icons--whether it comes to wearing high-end designer clothes, having close relations with the designer Raf Simons, fraternizing with supermodels like Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner to attending the most significant fashion shows and events like The Met Gala.
Ever since Rocky released his first single "Purple Swag" from his lesser-known first mixtape “Deep Purple”, A$AP skyrocketed to immense success. Achieving critical acclaim through his debut album Live. Love. A$AP, in 2011, leading to a record deal with Polo Grounds Music, RCA Records, and Sony Music Entertainment.
With much more experimentation, Rocky's second studio album "At. Long. Last. A$AP" had 16 guest appearances, including Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Rod Stewart. The song “L$D” from the album takes inspiration from the movie “Enter the Void” and experiments with psychedelic imagery, camera spinning and light fixture effects.
Stringing the audience along in anticipation for the third album, Testing was finally released in 2018, successfully expanding his repertoire, and leading him farther away from a largely mainstream hip-hop sound, to something unprecedented and unique. As the name suggests, the music was all about “Testing”.
Hip-hop’s relationship with high fashion goes way back. With interests in style, fashion and art, Rocky represents the term avant-garde in 2020. His forward-thinking clothing and unorthodox sense of style have formed a certain aesthetic that is often expressed in his signature looks.
Rocky made headlines for wearing a Russian staple scarf--into a look every hype beast was suddenly into. His grandma-approved trademark scarf resulted in a track titled "Babushka Boi" with an insane music video to go with it. A$AP told GQ, “The scarf originated after a gnarly scooter incident” where he got his face slashed which then inspired the use of a scarf.
With a high profile line up of fashion collaborations, he has ever-growing followers taking notes. Guess Originals called GUE$$, JW Anderson as well as modelling for Dior Homme as a fashion muse. Rocky has also made an appearance in the DKNY Spring 2014 campaign and the latest one with Gucci called "Life of a Rock Star" featuring the trio of music icons: Iggy Pop, Tyler, the Creator and A$AP Rocky.
Transcending the conventional sounds of hip-hop, iconic looks, incomparable style and creativity, featuring in films, A$AP Rocky continues to be an inspiration for our generation, making hip-hop an extraordinary space for fashion experimentation.
